Taylor Library, Corpus Christi, Cambridge University
The Taylor Library, Corpus Christi was opened by Stephen Hawking in August 2008 to much fanfare. Its exterior features the remarkable clock or ‘chronophage’ (time eater) conceived and designed by the library’s benefactor, John C. Taylor. The clock is unique for its mechanical, electronic and artistic attributes.
Aktiva has designed and made bookshelf and reading table lighting for the new library. Nearly 300 metres of linear fluorescent B-Line/Book shelf lights and B-Line/2by2 desk lights in polished chrome were mounted on the English Oak interior furnishings.
Another interior feature of the library is the distinctive cruciform-shaped upstands for the 2by2 fittings. These were specially designed for the library by the architects, Wright & Wright and Aktiva.
Over the past 10 years Aktiva has worked with many architects on a number of other Cambridge colleges including Wolfson, Girton, Trinity, Christ College and St Johns as well as the New Faculty of English Library.
