The b–line fluorescent range of reading desk and bookshelf lighting has just been installed in the 1940’s east wing of the Grade 2 listed building. Desk control modules and lighting were modified to conserve the oak surfaces and partitioning. The 1912 south wing is to be completed over summer 2013. Specified by Fielding Clegg Bradley Studios and Aecom’s Lighting Design department.

A star feature of the King’s Cross London re–development is the 39,000 square–metre campus for Central St Martins, part of the University of the Arts. The 2–floor Library planned by lead architect Stanton Williams and interior architect Pringle Brandon had to meet stringent capital spend and energy consumption criteria for its lighting. B–Square’s low wattage T5 lamps generated 200 lux average levels on to shelving and passageways using just a single row for each double bookshelf–sided aisle throughout the library. Aktiva’s particular speciality is library lighting – B-Square is one of three bookshelf and reading desk light ranges available.

Aktiva’s b–line bookcase lighting was specified by Arup Lighting with Haworth Tompkins throughout the main circulation, reading and reception areas of the newly refurbished London Library in St James’s. Its brushed stainless steel finish and clean lines discreetly embed the lighting in this traditional setting. Moreover b–line’s energy–efficient fluorescent illumination generates enough output to serve as the sole luminaire in main areas of the library.
